The gravest projected effects of the global heating for the UK have been outlined by experts, ranging from a scorching 4C rise in mean temperatures to a 2-metre rise in sea level. A separate possibility predicts a plunge of 6C in temperatures following the collapse of key Atlantic Ocean currents, which would massively disrupt farming and energy needs.

Possible Outcomes, Not Forecasts

These consequences, certain ones are linked to irreversible climate shifts, are seen as improbable but credible. The team said that these models plugged a hole in risk assessment that had rendered the UK unprepared for extreme outcomes.

"The worst-case scenarios we have detailed are not forecasts, but they are credible," said the lead researcher who oversaw the research. "Britain has been making preparations lacking the tools to assess worst-case scenarios. We've now given decision-makers what they need to plan for environmental results they wish to avoid, but can’t afford to ignore."

A Range of Severe Conditions Possibilities

A further series of dire projections details the potential extent of extreme weather between now and the end of the century. These indicate that temperatures could soar in certain periods by up to 6C above the norm, while rainfall could be 300% of standard measurements.

The probability of the extreme scenarios happening cannot be precisely determined due to uncertainty about what steps will be taken to tackle global heating and how the planet's climate will react. This approach was described as similar to security threat evaluations or resilience checks for economic stability.

Major Outcome Elements

• Four-Degree Warming: Global temperatures soaring past 4C by 2100 could happen if international cooperation collapses or if strong feedback loops such as the tropical forests dying release its vast reserves of carbon. This would cause severe and lengthy heatwaves and water shortages affecting the UK in summer.
• Ocean Circulation Failure: A key circulation system, the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (Amoc), is weakening and losing stability due to ocean warming. A complete failure starting around 2030 would lead to a six-degree temperature drop in the UK. "Farming would struggle enormously and water supplies would be fundamentally reshaped," said Arnell.
• Accelerated Coastal Flooding: A surge of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could occur if ice sheets in the Arctic and Antarctic collapse rapidly, submerging seaside communities. Unlike the other scenarios, this threat is already understood by planners.
• Pollution Paradox: Global averages could also be increased by about 0.75C if airborne particulates is rapidly cleaned up. This unexpected result occurs because pollution particles from fossil fuel combustion scatter solar radiation from reaching the ground.

Building Resilience Against the Extreme

These dire projections could be utilized in planning the building of critical national infrastructure, including expanded cities, nuclear power stations and flood defences. Awareness of these environmental threats could also speed the drive to cut fossil fuel emissions.

The study created the severe projections using a combination of real-world events, climate models and climate physics. The possibilities omit potential global problems such as the global food shortages and resource wars.

The research was requested as part of a official adaptation planning initiative. Earlier reports have warned that not enough attention was being paid to catastrophic yet improbable risks.

The government's climate advisors has stated that the UK must "prepare for two degrees of warming" and evaluate the threats for severe warming. Previous adaptation plans have been criticised as being "insufficient" by environmental groups.
