The distinctive yellow-fronted apartment block in the background assisted us verify the footage.
We are checking video footage and photographs circulated earlier today that purport to show the aftermath of a reported car bomb explosion that Russian officials say fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed of his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.
The initial step to verify the site from which the pictures were from was based on posts indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the capital city of Russia.
We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to match the unique yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex seen in the video.
Identifying additional structures, streetlights and the street layout confirmed where the pictures were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
