Hailing from Trowbridge in 1931, he established himself as a beloved figure who popularised classical music for a vast audience.
In the 1960s and 70s, he was the BBC's head of music and arts and won accolades for landmark programmes like The Golden Ring.
1978 saw him introduce the Young Musician of the Year, a competition instrumental in discovering future stars including violinist Nicola Benedetti.
